After determining what factors are shaping current weather, Evelyn looks to the past for similar patterns using historical and scientific records, such as tree rings and ice cores, She looks for five separate years in the past with similar weather trends.
Once five separate years are found, a comparison begins. Therefore if each year there were record blizzards, then it is likely that the current year will continue the pattern of the past years.
